Several candidates of Chinese descent in Auckland were shocked to see their faces erased on their election campaign boards, RNZ reports, next to Pākehā candidates whose faces were spared. Howick Ward councillor Paul Young, who is again running for the seat this year in his eighth local body election, said his face had been cut out or painted over in more than 20 billboards. First time election candidate Vinson Yu is running for a seat in Howick Local Board, which has an Asian population of 46%. He felt disheartened and angry after seeing his face cut out of campaign boards. “We are fairly participating in the elections,” said Yu who is a justice of peace and deputy chair of the Botany & Flat Bush Ethnic Association.
