Seven dead sharks found at Auckland’s Muriwai beach are likely to have been discarded by recreational fishers, Stuff reports. “This is not illegal,” said Department of Conservation technical advisor marine Clinton Duffy, “but if unwanted sharks are alive when landed they should be released in the water to maximise their chances of survival. Releasing live sharks promotes the sustainability of a valuable resource, as well as marine ecosystems.” About 3000 tonnes of school sharks are caught annually for their meat which is used in fish and chips.
