Times have changed since Aotearoa’s adoption system was written into law in 1955, Newsroom says. There are calls for the Ministry of Justice to give adopted children greater access to information about their birth family and culture, and support in reconnecting. The law doesn’t recognise same-sex relationships, de facto relationships, or whāngai adoptions – a Māori practice similar to adoption where a child lives with other members of their whānau besides their parents.
