The old NZDF landfill on Kauri Rd was used for decades as the dump for the Whenuapai and Hobsonville bases. It’s now been capped, but there are concerns about its environmental impact, Stuff reveals. For 60 years, everything from domestic waste and sewage, to sheets of asbestos and 200 litre drums of solvents, detergents and fuels were chucked on the pile. None of the precautions commonplace at modern landfills were taken when the site was established back in the late 1930’s – no lining was laid down, and there was nothing to stop contaminants escaping into the harbour.
