A proposal to offer low-income Aucklanders half-price public transport has been hailed by Auckland Mayor Phil Goff as a way to get thousands of people out of their cars and onto trains and buses. But not everyone agrees it’s going to make areas like South Auckland change lifelong habits, Stuff reports. Council is in talks with the Government about introducing congestion charging, but Goff said it will only work if there are cheap fares for people on low-incomes and more viable public transport options.
