What’s the best way to approach a tricky conversation such as the vaccine one? Gerard Barbalich shares some ideas on The Spinoff. He notes that simply giving people more facts does not reliably change their views. Nor does trying to ‘win’ the conversation. Rather, Barbalich suggests listening to and engaging with the other’s thoughts, discussing the ‘why’ behind their concerns, and applying that same logic to a separate issue to see how it holds up as a principle. “After a final round of listening, summarising and reflecting, I will step away without applying pressure, ensuring I can come back to talk another time.”
