A year after the country’s maritime border was closed, tourism operators called on the government to reopen the trans-Tasman cruise ship bubble, TVNZ reports. The maritime industry feeds hundreds of millions of dollars to the economy each year which is a vital income for local ports and businesses. While the global cruise ship industry has been picking up steam again overseas since July 2020, the NZ Ministry of Health refuses to budge with cruise ships explicitly excluded from the travel bubble. No time frame has been provided as to when New Zealand’s maritime border is set to reopen.
