Paraglider Davy Binois was hit by a drone in February 2018, while 100 metres up in the air. He managed to land unscathed, but the situation could have been much worse, Stuff reports. Binois was paragliding at Karioitahi Beach, near Waiuku in rural south Auckland, when his glider’s lines were struck by a drone. On 18 February 2021, the drone’s pilot, Ashley Richard Pitman, was fined $1000 at Manukau District Court, for operating a drone in a manner that caused unnecessary endangerment, and for failing to give way and keep clear of a manned aircraft. This marks New Zealand’s first conviction for a crash between a drone and a manned aircraft.
