Campylobacter is the most commonly reported cause of foodborne illness in New Zealand, says RNZ. It can kill or leave sufferers with paralysis and secondary conditions. Is it time to take control away from the Ministry for Primary Industries and give it to public health? The ‘whodunnit’ for an estimated 84% of New Zealand’s campylobacteriosis cases is poultry. Consumer magazine’s 2016 survey of 40 chickens purchased from New Zealand retail outlets found 65% tested positive for campylobacter. No wonder our campylobacteriosis rate is one of the highest in the developed world.
