The first instalment of Johnny Green’s stolen egg cup saga was written back in June, says The Spinoff, as the Auckland collector hunted for one very important egg cup. Thanks to the generosity of fellow New Zealanders, five were found. In September, Johnny was given another batch of egg cups to examine. None were a match, but that barely seemed to matter anymore. One cup from Patumahoe came with a handwritten card: “Dear Johnny, I hope with all my heart and soul this is your long lost egg cup.” The 92-year-old’s eyes welled up as he read the card aloud. “That’s absolutely lovely, there’s some lovely people around eh?”
