Papua New Guinean expats, students and former residents in Auckland, celebrated the country’s Independence Day at the weekend, RNZ reports. One expat said there are a number of Papua New Guineans who study in New Zealand. “We formed a community group called the Wontoks (community) of Aotearoa.” Over 100 gathered in Cornwall Park in Mt Eden on Saturday to celebrate the event, with cultural displays and dancing. Tributes to the late Queen Elizabeth II were have been incorporated in the Independence Day celebrations, signifying positive relations between Papua New Guinea and the United Kingdom.
