Rob Osborne says he is among the last generation who has actually been inside tunnels on Maungauika-North Head, as a kid in the 1950s, before they were closed. The tunnels he’s talking about are almost mythical relics of a wartime past, Stuff reports, as well as part of legends around what happened to ammunition after the war years. Despite the eyewitness accounts of dozens of civilians and ex-military personnel, the Government and custodians are adamant: there is no mystery and “there is no reason to believe hidden tunnels exist”. And yet, the Minister of Defence from 1987-1990 is recorded in a phone call, saying there was deteriorating ammunition underneath North Head. Claims which the Government today disputes.
