Waitākere Hospital’s maternity unit has been diverting women in labour to another hospital amid a midwife shortage, Stuff reports. On Monday, midwives were sent a message warning them the unit was at capacity and to divert expectant mothers to North Shore Hospital, 26km away. Midwifery Council data shows nearly 200 midwives have left the profession since 2021. “We are providing additional nursing and other support where required to ensure mothers and babies remain safe in our care,” a spokesperson for Health New Zealand Waitematā said.
