Auckland’s regional parks are havens for wildlife, says Auckland Council. And if you know where to look, you can spot some of Aotearoa’s rarest and most beautiful birds. Tāwharanui Ecology Path, Rotoroa Island and Shakespear Heritage Path are just three of the six top parks for bird-watching. Maukatia Gannet Path is one of the only mainland gannet colonies, and Cudlip Point Path is home to blue reef herons and blue penguins. Finally, the Oruawharo River Trail boasts a mix of common native species and rarer birds such as kingfishers.
