The public is being warned not to eat shellfish collected from an area of north Auckland’s east coast after unsafe levels of a paralytic toxin were detected, Stuff reports. The warning area spans from Hauroa Point on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula up to Takatu Point on the Tāwharanui Peninsula, and includes the Mahurangi Harbour. Symptoms from ingesting the toxin could include numbness around the face and extremities, difficulty swallowing and breathing, headaches and vomiting.
