Auckland recorded a net population decline for the first time ever over the year to June, with 13,500 Aucklanders moving to other parts of the country. Economist Benje Patterson has analysed internal migration, and warns that with the border closure slowing overseas migrants to a trickle, Auckland will face worsening skills shortages if an increasing number of those in the peak years of their working lives continue to leave.
