Ardmore Airport in South Auckland has halted plans to fell a grove of 60 kahikatea after a protest from a tree protection group, Stuff reports. Airport management is now looking at other expansion options that might incorporate trees into the design, with the grove currently fenced off while the redesign work takes place. It’s a huge win for tree climber and arborist Zane Wedding, who raced down to the site on Sunday to join the protest as some trees were already coming down. “This is what we need from developers,” he said. “People who are willing to retain old significant trees. They have been so gracious, to hear us and compromise.”
