Auckland Council has cut its workforce by 643 – or 9% in a year – largely due to cost savings in its Covid-19-hit ’emergency budget,’ Stuff reports. The biggest cut has come in its largest division of customer and community services, where more than one-in-ten left, totalling 395 staff. While the lowering of staff levels has been good for the council’s accounts, politicians have expressed worries about the scale and depth of restructuring.
