South Auckland’s Papatoetoe Boxing Club has been forced to shut its doors after 30 years, due to Covid-19, NZ Herald reports. Owners Grant and Mary Arkell have dedicated their lives to helping the South Auckland community through boxing. However after five different locations and hundreds of members including Joseph Parker and two-time New Zealand middleweight champion Mose Auimatagi, in 2020 the boxing club was hit by the financial effects of Covid-19. Lockdowns in Auckland meant the Pokies fund which Arkell heavily relied on also dried up. The club can no longer afford to stay open, which means they have two weeks left before the doors close, possibly for good.
