Despite Government assurances they won’t be dobbed in by immigration authorities, advocates say that many overstayers still won’t come forward to get tested for Covid-19, Stuff reports. It’s estimated there are more than 10,000 people without visas currently flying under Immigration New Zealand’s radar. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has noted the vaccine will be available to everyone in New Zealand regardless of visa status. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has assured that overstayers from 2020 will not face consequences if they come forward for a Covid-19 test. However, Pacific Leadership Forum spokesman Manase Lua said people who are staying in New Zealand illegally won’t engage with health services as they’re still dubious.
