Due to safety concerns, police have shut down a community checkpoint in Waiomio in Northland, RNZ reveals. The checkpoint was one of three set up in the Far North. According to Inspector Riki Whiu from Northland police, their focus was safety; they needed to ensure pedestrians were safe on roadside areas, and that motorists were not prevented from driving on a state highway which has a 100km/h speed limit. Police are continuing to hold discussions with the group and the relationship remains “positive.”
