A congestion charge of up to $3.50 has been suggested by officials for the Auckland CBD, but a recent Stuff article proposes that Auckland can combat both climate and poluution issues by understanding that the two things converge. “By significantly reducing our driving, we will avert the congestion which will worsen no matter how much is spent solely building new roads or public transport systems. That makes Auckland an easier place to get around, a more efficient place to do business, and a healthier place to live. Because road transport is the biggest single contributor to Auckland’s climate-damaging carbon footprint, driving less is a big contributor to the committed goal of halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.”
