Memorial plan approved despite some local opposition

Local government has given the go-ahead for a memorial in Parnell, Auckland, commemorating the victims of Air New Zealand flight 901 which crashed into Mt Erebus in Antarctica four decades ago. Families of the crash victims expressed both the trauma of having their loss revisited during the public debates, and relief that their loved ones will now have a permanent place of collective remembrance.
