Rising retail crime is uglier, more violent, more organised, and costs households at least $800 a year in higher prices, Stuff reveals. RetailNZ chief executive Greg Harford says there are clear connections between shoplifting and organised crime. “We’re not talking about a kid stealing a chocolate bar from a dairy … items being stolen are typically of substantially higher value, and they are typically stolen to order.” One store owner is spending $2500 a week on security; the guard helps protect his workers, customers and stock from aggressive shoplifters.
