Used nappies, dog poo, car parts, and even a pig’s head are just some of the items contaminating recycling bins nationwide, Stuff reports. They collectively cost councils millions of dollars each year. Auckland City had to divert 19,000 tonnes, or 15%, of recycling into landfills. If Aucklanders reduced kerbside recycling contamination by just 1%, it would save $116,000 per year, council waste solutions general manager Parul Sood​ said.
