Evan Reece says he and his mother are “dreaming” of being back in their Papatoetoe home by Christmas after it was heavily damaged by a tornado nearly five months ago, Stuff reports. The damage to their house was worse than expected, as gaping holes in the roof let rain drench much of the house’s electrical wiring, making it too dangerous to turn the power back on without a full rewire. Evan’s mother moved into a temporary cabin in their driveway, while he slept in a sleepout with no power, and they had to rent a port-a-loo when access to the house became limited. Scaffolding is still visible on a number of homes across the neighbourhood and some houses still have tarpaulins or plastic covering their roofs.
