Tāmaki Makaurau’s mayor, Phil Goff, has issued a formal apology after an Auckland Council clerical error left hundreds of Bulgarian-New Zealanders unable to vote in their recent elections, The Spinoff reveals. The mistake meant they also couldn’t vote in the subsequent presidential elections, impacting more than 250 eligible voters. The venue, Takapuna’s Mary Thomas Centre, had been cancelled because of Covid-19 protocols, but organisers hadn’t been warned of the cancellation.
